Pet Sounds Entry

The beach boys image and sound prior to recording "Pet Sounds" was all about cars, girls and surfing, pretty much outlining the stereotypical californian lifestyle. Brian Wilson was the main producer of the beach boys Pet Sounds album. He brought several new ideas to the table that influenced their ultimate sound. He also sang lead, harmony and backing vocals throughout the album. He also played organ, piano, keyboard, arranged sound effects, and directed session musicians. Wilson was inspired to write this album based on the beatles Rubber Soul album. He claimed that the Rubber Soul album contained all original material that was all exceptional. The selection and utilization of exotic instruments set this album apart from its competitors. These instuments included a harpsichord, a mandolin, a 12 string guitar and coke cans. Also, what makes the ablum unique is that it follows a strict storyline of a intense "Boy meets girl" scenerio which included the ups and downs of a relationship. From "wouldnt it be nice" to "Caroline" the album covers all the aspects and emotions of a relationship from the good to the bad. As a listener, Pet Sounds is for the most part pleasent to listen to. As an engineer, I credit the production techniques and the diverse use of instruments to its sound. Also, I like how the band used other popular music of the era to influence the writing process.
